Schleich Dinosaurs

The Schleich dinosaurs are fantastic representations of what the dinosaurs really looked like. Thanks to Schleich, we don't have to rely on our imaginations anymore when it comes to visualizing the dinosaurs.

But what about the real story behind each of the dinosaurs? Who were they? What did they eat? How big were they? Were they ferocious, or docile? Did you know that all dinosaurs laid eggs? Did you know that some dinosaurs actually had feathers?

Let's explore seven fascinating Schleich dinosaurs and find out what they were really like.

Ankylosaurus

Schleich Dinosaurs | 11.99

Pronounced ANK-ill-oh-SORE-us.

The Ankylosaurus was a herbivore, meaning he ate plants instead of meat. Instead of a snout, as the Dimetrodon and T-Rex had, the Ankylosaurus had a beak. Behind the beak were rows of small, leaf-shaped teeth for chewing plants and vegetation.

Just because the Ankylosaurus was an herbivore, that doesn't mean it was a push-over! With its armored plates covering its back and the large club on the end of its tail, the Ankylosaurus knew how to protect itself from predators. One swipe of that clubbed tail probably deterred even the most ferocious of predators.

Agustinia

Schleich Dinosaurs | 19.99

Pronounced uh-GUHS-tihn-EE-ah.

It was named after Augustin Marinelli, the student who discovered the fossilized bones. This dinosaur was huge and reached the length of 50 feet from snout to tip of the tail!

Agustinia was a herbivore and ate plants and vegetation. It had two rows of armored spines along the ridge of its back that may have been used more as decorations than defense. Some paleontologists speculate that the fossil remains that appeared to be armor were actually fragments of hips and ribs.

Baryonyx

Schleich Dinosaurs | 19.99

Pronounced bare-ee-ON-iks.

The name Baryonyx means "heavy claw" because it had a huge claw on the first finger, which measured about twelve inches long.

It had a long, low, and narrow snout that is similar to today's gharial, which is a fish-eating crocodile from India. Some experts believe that the Baryonyx would crouch in the water and catch fish similar to how the modern grizzly bear catches fish. Other experts believe the Baryonyx was a scavenger, which means that it didn't kill its food. Instead, it fed on animals that were already dead.

Cryolophosaurus

Schleich Dinosaurs | 19.99

Pronounced CRY-oh-loaf-oh-SAWR-us.

The name Cryolophosaurus means "frozen crested lizard" because it was found in Antarctica, and it had an unusual crest on its head that resembled a Spanish comb that Flamenco dancers wore in their hair. At one time, it was nicknamed Elvisaurus because the crest resembled Elvis's famous pompadour.

The Cryolophosaurus was a stiff-tailed carnivore who could probably take down its prey, or possibly even a tree, with one swipe of its powerful tail.

Dimetrodon

Schleich Dinosaurs | 11.99

Pronounced DIE-mee-truh-don.

The Dimetrodon was a carnivore, like the T-Rex. Its name means "two measures of teeth," because it had large teeth in the front of its snout that helped it tear through flesh, and smaller teeth on both sides of the mouth for chewing.

The Dimetrodon had a sail along its back that had spines the extended upward in a grill shape that was connected by hard skin. With its sail, it was about as tall as a grown man, but it was really long, about ten feet long! The Dimetrodon had five short toes on its feet with small, sharp claws on each toe.

Postosuchus

Schleich Dinosaurs | 11.99

Pronounced post-oe-SUE-cuss.

The name Postosuchus means "crocodile from Post" because the remains of this dinosaur were found in Post, Texas. During the late Triassic period, Postosuchus was one of the largest carnivorous reptiles measuring nearly four feet tall and thirteen feet long. Its neck, back, and tail were covered in thick plates that formed scales for protection.

Experts believe that the Postosuchus may have been able to stand on its hind legs because the front legs were shorter than the back legs.

Tyrannosaurus Rex

Schleich Dinosaurs | 24.99

Pronounced ty-RAN-no-SAU-rus.

The T-Rex was the king of the dinosaurs. You probably already know this, but the T-Rex was a carnivore, which means it ate meat. Its teeth were terrifying! They were big enough to crunch bones, and they had saw-like edges for cutting through flesh. The T-Rex had powerful feet, as well, with three strong toes on each foot. The T-Rex used these toes to force its prey to the ground.

It also had a dewclaw, which is a fourth toe located up higher on its foot, but the dewclaw was pretty useless. Dogs have dewclaws as well. Some scientists believe the T-Rex even had feathers!
