Play-Doh is a fun-filled moldable, non-toxic compound made primarily of water, salt and flour. At least that's what Hasbro has to say about it.

When checking out the patent from 2004, it shows that it's a mixture of water, a retrogradation inhibitor, a starch-based binder, lubricant, salt, preservatives, surfactant, humectant, hardener, coloring, fragrance, borax, and petroleum additives.

It also contains some wheat and may cause reactions with those allergic to wheat. You should not eat Play-Doh.

Play-Doh History

Play-Doh wasn't always intended as a children's toy. It was originally a putty-like substance created by Noah McVicker. It was originally designed as a wallpaper cleaner.

After World War II, many changed their heating from coal to natural gas, leaving the product as useless. Noah's nephew, Joe, joined the company to try and save it.

His sister-in-law, Kay Zufall, was a nursery school teacher who knew that many parents used the product as a modeling toy with kids. Kay and her husband named it Play-Doh, marking the beginning of a new era for the compound. 

Joe then took the product to conventions to market it as an educational product and the rest is history.

Play-Doh was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1998.
